Website Promotion 101: Introduction to Internet Marketing

Every successful search engine marketer knew the basic principles of Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Marketing and Social Media Marketing. These three marketing strategies are the important elements to increase your business online presence. For beginners, let’s define SEO, SEM and SMM:

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) – is the process of affecting the Search Engine Ranking Positions (SERP) of a site. In Google, the more frequently your site appears in the first page, the more visitors you will receive from the search engine users. SEO helps improve your natural or unpaid (sometimes they called organic) search results.

Search Engine Marketing (SMM) – is an online marketing strategy that involves promoting a site, improves its visibility and building a brand name for your business online. The most common vendors of search engine marketing are Google Adwords, Microsoft adCenter and Yahoo Search Marketing.

Social Media Marketing (SMM) –  is the process of getting traffic to your site through the use of social media channels. Most common social media networks are Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Google+ and Pinterest. These social media channels are a perfect place to interact with potential consumers around your location and do some advertising campaign.

Understanding Search Engines and it’s Classifications

Search Engines (SE) are the most popular hub for people to search for everything. They are using keywords to search for items, products, services and other information and this is the best place to let customers find your business. From these keywords, the search engine will pick up the appropriate match for the information in its gigantic database of web pages and show the most relevant results. Each search engine uses different algorithm as their basis to show relevant results. Google for instance uses Panda and Penguin update to filter results and show only those quality, non-spammy and relevant results.

Search engines are classified into four different types:

  1. The Hybrid Engines are the META engines and those using other engine’s result.
  2. The Crawler-based Engines are the most common type of search engines. They have their own search engine algorithm and results are generated from their own database of web pages.
  3. The Directory Engines are mostly human-edited type of search engines.
  4. The Paid Inclusion Engines allow people to submit their web pages for inclusion with corresponding cost.

Search engine uses some form of bots to crawl pages in their repositories. These bots may sometimes referred to as a “robot”, “crawler” or “spider”. When someone performs a search for a particular keyword, spiders crawl your pages by following onpage links within your home page through the internal pages. They will then retrieve the relevant page based on the keyword searched and display the first 10 results (Google usually has 10 results per page).
